The Indian Davis Cup team suffered a setback on Saturday as the doubles pair of Rohan Bopanna and Yuki Bhambri lost to the Danish duo of Holger Rune and Johannes Ingildsen in straight sets. The match lasted just 65 minutes, with the Danish pair dominating the Indians and winning 6-2, 6-4. The presence of world number 9 Holger Rune proved to be a decisive factor in the match.
Earlier, India’s Sumit Nagal had brought the team level with a hard-fought victory over August Holmgren. Nagal, ranked 506, recovered from dropping serve in the first game of the match and went on to win 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 in two hours and 27 minutes. Bhambri, on the other hand, struggled in the opening singles match, losing 2-6, 2-6 to Rune. Bhambri has since quit playing singles and now focuses on doubles.
Despite the loss, India will look to bounce back in the remaining matches and secure a spot in the Davis Cup World Group. The team will look to draw on the fighting spirit shown by Nagal in his match and hope to secure a positive result in the remaining fixtures.
