Pope Francis Passes Away at 87, Vatican Prepares for Funeral Rites
Vatican City, April 14, 2025 – In a solemn announcement at 9:45 AM from Casa Santa Marta, Cardinal Kevin Farrell, Camerlengo of the Holy Roman Church, confirmed the passing of Pope Francis, the Bishop of Rome. The beloved pontiff breathed his last at 7:35 AM.
“Dearest brothers and sisters, with deep sorrow I must announce the death of our Holy Father Francis,” Cardinal Farrell declared. “His entire life was devoted to the Lord and to the service of His Church. He showed us how to live the Gospel with unwavering faith, courage, and love for all, especially the poor and marginalized. We commend his soul to the infinite merciful love of the Triune God.”
Later, Matteo Bruni, Director of the Holy See Press Office, addressed reporters and said arrangements are underway to move the late Pope’s body to St. Peter’s Basilica on the morning of Wednesday, April 23, 2025, allowing the faithful to offer their final prayers and pay homage.
“The timing of the transfer and veneration will be confirmed following tomorrow’s first General Congregation of the Cardinals,” Bruni added.
The rite of certification of death and placement in the coffin took place on Monday evening at 8:00 PM in the chapel at the ground floor of Casa Santa Marta, where Pope Francis had lived. The ceremony, which lasted under an hour, was officiated by Cardinal Farrell, who read and validated the official declaration of death.
Following tradition, seals were placed on both the papal apartment in the Apostolic Palace and on the private residence in Casa Santa Marta.
As of Monday evening, close aides and Vatican officials began paying their respects to the late pontiff, reflecting the somber mood within the Catholic Church.
The first General Congregation of Cardinals is scheduled for Tuesday morning, where the date of Pope Francis’ funeral will likely be set.
