Joe Biden mistakenly praised China during his speech to the Canadian parliament on Friday, causing members of parliament to laugh briefly. While discussing Canadian migration policies, the US President said, “Today, I applaud China for stepping up,” before correcting himself and acknowledging Canada.

According to the New York Post, Biden confused the two countries while praising Canada for agreeing to accept more migrants in exchange for US support to deport those who illegally sneak into Canada. US Congressman Byron Donalds shared the clip on Twitter, asking if it was a “gaffe or Freudian slip,” while Eric Trump called it an “embarrassment to the United States of America.”
Biden made a similar mistake during a later press conference discussing China’s relationship with Russia. Biden was on a two-day visit to Ottawa for talks with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, and in a joint statement, the leaders acknowledged the “serious long-term challenge to the international order posed by the People’s Republic of China.”
