New Delhi: In the wake of the horrifying terror attack in Pahalgam that claimed 26 lives — mostly tourists — the Central Government has stepped in to ensure the safe return of visitors from Jammu and Kashmir. Union Minister for Tourism, Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, addressed public concerns on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), pledging full support.
“In light of yesterday’s tragic incident in Kashmir, many tourists are understandably anxious and reconsidering their travel plans. I’ve spoken to the concerned authorities and urged airlines, hotels, and tour operators to allow full refunds without hassle,” the minister posted.

The Jammu and Kashmir administration is also working around the clock to assist tourists and victims’ families. Former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah expressed grief over the exodus of tourists but acknowledged their fear. “It’s heartbreaking to see our guests leave after the tragic terror attack in Pahalgam, but we completely understand their decision,” he said in his post on X.
To aid the evacuation process, a dedicated control room has been established at Srinagar Airport. The UT government is actively coordinating with airlines to arrange transportation for the deceased and their families across India.
The attack took place on Tuesday afternoon when terrorists opened fire at the popular Baisaran meadow near Pahalgam. This incident is being described as the deadliest in the Kashmir Valley since the Pulwama strike in 2019.
