A cyclonic storm struck Jalpaiguri district in West Bengal on Sunday afternoon, resulting in at least four fatalities and over 100 injuries. The powerful winds caused significant damage to houses and uprooted numerous trees in both Jalpaiguri and neighboring Mainaguri.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee promptly visited the affected area, and rescue operations are currently underway. In a tweet, CM Banerjee expressed her concern about the sudden heavy rainfall and stormy winds that led to loss of life, injuries, and property damage. District authorities, along with police, DMG (Disaster Management Group), and QRT (Quick Response Team), swiftly mobilized to provide relief and manage the crisis.
Efforts are being made to relocate affected individuals to safer locations. The district administration has assured compensation to the families of the deceased, following established guidelines and adhering to the Model Code of Conduct (MCC).
BJP MP Jayanta Kumar Roy reported that 166 injured patients sought medical attention, with 36 of them admitted to local hospitals. Tragically, three individuals were brought in already deceased, bringing the total death toll to four.
Meanwhile, West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose established an emergency cell at the Raj Bhavan to coordinate storm response efforts in Jalpaiguri. The Governor is actively liaising with the Disaster Management Authority in Delhi and has requested additional reinforcements in terms of manpower and materials. Tomorrow, he plans to visit the ground zero and meet with the victims’ families.
