Google Experiments With New AI Mode, Replacing ‘I’m Feeling Lucky’ Button on Homepage
Google is testing a significant change to its homepage by introducing a new AI Mode option that could potentially replace the long-standing “I’m Feeling Lucky” button. The feature is currently being tested with a small group of users in the U.S. through Google Labs.
A Google spokesperson confirmed to The Verge that this change is part of a limited test and that no decision has been made about a full rollout. Some early testers observed a rotating rainbow border appearing when hovering over the new AI widget, suggesting a visual cue for interactive AI functionality.
Interestingly, not all test versions remove “I’m Feeling Lucky.” In some cases, a shortcut for AI Mode is added to the search bar while keeping the original widget intact.
AI Integration and Strategic Timing
Google has been exploring different ways to integrate AI into its core services. Back in March, the tech giant revealed that AI Mode would be tested within search results pages, not the homepage. However, this recent test suggests Google may be reconsidering that approach.
The timing is critical. Last week, during the ongoing Google antitrust trial, Apple executive Eddy Cue revealed that Google search traffic dropped for the first time ever in April—a sign that users might be shifting toward AI-driven platforms for search needs. The revelation sent Google’s stock tumbling, putting added pressure on the company to innovate.

For now, Google is framing the new AI Mode as an experiment. Whether it will officially replace or complement traditional search tools like “I’m Feeling Lucky” remains to be seen.
