Canada Votes in Historic Election Amid Trump Tensions: Carney vs Poilievre

Ottawa:
Canadians head to the polls today in a pivotal election that will determine whether Prime Minister Mark Carney and the Liberal Party will extend their decade-long rule or cede power to Pierre Poilievre’s Conservative Party.

Polling stations close first in the four Atlantic provinces, with early results expected after 7:30 p.m. EST (5:00 a.m. IST Tuesday). A clearer picture of the national outcome will emerge post 9:30 p.m. EST (7:00 a.m. IST), once major provinces like Ontario and Quebec finish voting.

This election is being viewed as not only a leadership contest but also a referendum on US President Donald Trump. Trump’s re-election and aggressive comments about Canada—including a controversial suggestion that Canada become America’s 51st state—have deeply unsettled Canadian voters.

Initially, polls suggested a strong Conservative lead. However, Trump’s actions shifted momentum, putting Poilievre—a career politician known for his Trump-style bravado—on the defensive. His campaign focused on domestic issues, particularly the soaring cost of living that plagued Justin Trudeau’s final years in office.

Yet, as the campaign progressed, Carney emerged as the preferred candidate, particularly for his perceived strength in standing up to Trump. Mark Carney, 60, a former investment banker and central bank governor for both Canada and Britain, only recently assumed leadership after Justin Trudeau stepped down.

Public broadcaster CBC’s poll aggregator shows a tight race, with Liberals at 42.8% and Conservatives at 38.8% nationally.

If Carney’s Liberals pull off a victory, it would represent one of the most remarkable comebacks in Canadian political history.

President Donald Trump has intensified threats to make Canada the 51st state of the U.S., already imposing severe tariffs on Canadian goods. In response, Carney announced the snap elections, appealing to voters for a strong mandate to confront Trump's escalating challenges.

Canada Election 2025 Live: Key Races Across the Nation

BURNABY CENTRAL, BRITISH COLUMBIA
Burnaby Central is a newly established constituency. The total number of seats in Canada’s parliament has increased from 338 in 2021 to 343 in 2025, a change driven by the country’s growing population. The outcome in this riding is significant for Jagmeet Singh's New Democratic Party, as it lies in British Columbia, a key stronghold for Sikh voters. The NDP faces a tough contest here against the Liberal Party of Canada, and the result will indicate whether they have the strength to challenge the ruling party.

Jagmeet Singh, who previously kept former Prime Minister Trudeau's minority government afloat in exchange for increased social spending, claims that it is because of him that Canadians in this region have benefited. Singh is running as the NDP candidate in the riding. However, recent polls show him in third place, with the majority of Canadians in the riding supporting the Liberals.

Canada Election 2025 Live: Key Races Across the Nation

TROIS-RIVIERES, QUEBEC
Quebec, with its significant population and the second-highest number of ridings in Canada, is a crucial region for any party aiming for a strong parliamentary mandate. However, it presents a unique challenge for most parties, as it is the only province in Canada with its own political force—the Bloc Quebecois. The province has long sought independence from Canada, and voters typically support their own party.

Trois-Rivieres, however, stands out as one of the ridings in Quebec where multiple parties—sometimes as many as four—compete for the vote. The 2021 election result was extremely close, with the Bloc winning by just 83 votes out of the 58,110 cast.

AURORA-OAK RIDGES-RICHMOND HILL, ONTARIO
A key to victory lies in the so-called Golden Horseshoe, a riding-dense crescent along Lake Ontario that includes Toronto and surrounding cities. From 2018 to 2021, the Conservatives held this pivotal constituency. Major concerns in this critical riding include rising cost of living, a housing crisis, and immigration.

The Conservatives have been vocal in their criticism of the ruling Liberal government over these issues. Should they manage to reclaim this riding, it would provide them with a significant advantage.
