New Delhi / Islamabad:
A day after India launched strong diplomatic measures in response to the Pahalgam terror attack, Pakistan has retaliated by threatening to suspend all bilateral agreements, including the historic Simla Agreement.
On Wednesday, India took decisive steps:
- Put the Indus Waters Treaty on hold
- Downgraded diplomatic relations with Pakistan
- Expelled Pakistani diplomats and defence officials
- Cancelled all visas issued to Pakistani nationals
- Ordered departure within 48 hours
- Closed the Attari-Wagah border
In response, Pakistan’s National Security Committee, led by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, held an emergency meeting. A statement from the Prime Minister’s Office strongly condemned India’s move, particularly its suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty—labeling any diversion of water as an “Act of War.”
In retaliation, Pakistan announced the following countermeasures:
- Closure of airspace to all Indian-owned or operated airlines
- Total suspension of trade with India, including transit trade
- Shutdown of the Wagah border crossing
- Reduction in Indian diplomatic staff, mirroring India’s move by expelling Indian defence officials from Islamabad
This sharp escalation comes in the wake of the deadliest terrorist attack in Kashmir since 2019, prompting India to adopt a zero-tolerance approach against cross-border terrorism and the entities believed to support it.
