Apple Reaffirms India Production Plans Amid Trump’s Comments: ‘No Change in Investment Strategy’

New Delhi: Despite US President Donald Trump’s recent statement discouraging Apple CEO Tim Cook from expanding operations in India, government and company sources have confirmed there is no change in Apple’s investment strategy. Plans to scale up iPhone production in India remain firmly on track.

On Thursday night, Indian government officials downplayed Trump’s remarks, highlighting India’s growing role in global smartphone manufacturing. “India offers a competitive manufacturing ecosystem,” said officials, emphasizing that a company like Apple sees value in domestic production to maintain global competitiveness.

Apple, which recently revealed that a majority of iPhones sold in the US from the June quarter onwards will be ‘Made in India’, sees India as a critical part of its future supply chain. “Any investment decision will be driven by global logistics and cost-efficiency,” a government source added.

Apple insiders echoed the sentiment. Speaking to PTI, company executives confirmed that plans to build a major manufacturing facility in India are proceeding as scheduled, unaffected by Trump’s comments made during a business forum in Qatar.

Trump, addressing the audience, claimed he told Cook, “I don’t want you building in India. You can build in India, but India can take care of themselves.” He also referenced high import tariffs as a reason Apple should manufacture more in the US. However, Apple has not made any official statement suggesting relocation or withdrawal from India.

While Apple has committed $500 billion in US investments, experts argue that relocating iPhone manufacturing to the US is unrealistic due to the sheer scale, complexity, and cost involved. Over 76 million iPhones were sold in the US in 2024, and duplicating the supply chain could cost tens of billions.

Meanwhile, India’s role continues to grow. As of now, 15% of global iPhone production comes from India. Accessories like AirPods are also being manufactured in Telangana. In April, Electronics Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw stated that iPhone exports from India had reached ₹1.5 lakh crore in FY25—a win for the ‘Make in India’ initiative.

Apple’s strategy to diversify production away from China also helps it avoid heavy US tariffs amid ongoing trade tensions between the two countries. The move further solidifies India’s position as a rising global electronics manufacturing hub.
