New Delhi, May 11 – The recently brokered ceasefire between India and Pakistan continues to make headlines after former US President Donald Trump publicly claimed credit for facilitating the agreement. The truce, which took effect at 5:00 PM on Saturday, was first announced not by military officials, but by Trump himself via his platform Truth Social.
During an interview with Sky News, Pakistan’s High Commissioner to the UK, Mohammad Faisal, was asked to clarify Trump’s involvement in mediating the ceasefire. Faisal responded,
“No, I don’t have all the details about it, but I have no reason to doubt President Trump, who has posted that they played a role. It’s always good when our friends help us move toward peace and sustain it.”
Trump’s post praised the leadership of India and Pakistan, calling their decision to de-escalate a “historic and heroic” move.
“Millions of innocent people could have died. Your legacy is greatly enhanced by your brave actions,” he wrote.
Trump added that he’s committed to working with both nations toward a long-term resolution on Kashmir, stating,
“I will work with you both to see if, after a ‘thousand years,’ a solution can be arrived at concerning Kashmir.”
On Sunday, he again lauded the “strength, wisdom, and fortitude” shown by both countries in halting military aggression, calling the ceasefire a shining example of responsible diplomacy.
Meanwhile, normalcy returned to Kashmir for the first time in nearly a week. Residents reported a peaceful night free from the sound of drones, aircraft, and missile fire – a rare and welcome break after six tense days of conflict.
