India, Pakistan Announce Immediate Ceasefire After U.S. Mediation, India Reiterates Tough Stand on Terror

New Delhi, May 10 – In a dramatic shift from escalating conflict to cautious diplomacy, India and Pakistan agreed to a full and immediate ceasefire on Saturday evening following intense U.S.-brokered negotiations.

The breakthrough was first revealed at 5:25 PM IST by former U.S. President Donald Trump on Truth Social, where he announced that both nations had agreed to halt all military activity. Minutes later, confirmations came from both India’s Ministry of External Affairs and Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry, ending days of missile, drone, and artillery strikes.

According to Indian officials, the ceasefire was initiated after Pakistan’s Director General of Military Operations (DGMO) called his Indian counterpart at 3:35 PM IST, with the agreement taking effect at 5:00 PM IST across land, air, and sea domains.

Taking to social media from Washington D.C., Trump wrote:

“After a long night of talks mediated by the United States, I am pleased to announce that India and Pakistan have agreed to a FULL AND IMMEDIATE CEASEFIRE. Congratulations to both countries on using common sense and great intelligence.”

Backing Trump’s announcement, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio confirmed that both sides had not only agreed to a ceasefire but also consented to begin talks on a broad range of issues at a neutral venue. “We commend Prime Ministers Modi and Sharif on their wisdom and statesmanship,” he wrote on X.

Shortly after, Pakistan Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar confirmed the truce and claimed that Pakistan had always sought regional peace. This came even after three consecutive nights of attacks on Indian military and civilian targets.

India’s Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri issued a formal statement at 6:00 PM, confirming the DGMO communication and ceasefire timeline. He added that both DGMOs would speak again at 12:00 PM on Monday to monitor the agreement.

While the ceasefire is a welcome de-escalation, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar made it clear that India’s counterterrorism stance remains unchanged:

“India and Pakistan have today worked out an understanding on stoppage of firing and military action. India has consistently maintained a firm and uncompromising stance against terrorism in all its forms and manifestations. It will continue to do so,” he posted on X.

Though the guns have fallen silent for now, the broader diplomatic climate remains tense, especially following the Pahalgam terror attack that killed 26 civilians last month, prompting India’s ‘Operation Sindoor’ against terror camps across the border.
