New Delhi/Islamabad, May 1, 2025 – Pakistan’s Defence Minister Khawaja Asif has issued a stark warning, threatening to target any structure India may construct on the Indus River, in response to India’s recent suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT) following the Pahalgam terror attack.
In an interview on Geo News, Asif declared,
“If they [India] attempt to build any kind of structure, we will strike it.”
He accused India of committing a form of aggression, stating that water diversion or obstruction can be as deadly as military actions.
“Aggression doesn’t only come in the form of bullets or bombs—it can also be by denying access to water, which can cause hunger and thirst,” he added.
India suspended the IWT on April 22, days after a terror attack in Pahalgam killed 26 Indian tourists. The move was seen as a direct response to Pakistan’s alleged support of cross-border terrorism.
Asif framed India’s control over river waters as a national security threat and warned that any “architectural attempts” on Indus infrastructure would be treated as acts of war.
This growing water conflict may deepen the existing diplomatic crisis between the two nuclear-armed neighbours.
The Indus Waters Treaty, signed in 1960 and brokered by the World Bank, has survived multiple wars. India’s decision to suspend it is seen as an unprecedented shift in regional policy.
