Tel Aviv, May 2025: Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has pledged a strong military response after a ballistic missile launched by Yemen’s Houthi rebels struck near Ben Gurion Airport, narrowly missing one of Israel’s most critical infrastructures.

The Iran-backed Houthis claimed responsibility for the missile strike, saying it was launched in solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza. The attack caused panic among travelers and left eight people injured, according to Magen David Adom (MDA), Israel’s emergency response agency.

In a video shared on social media, Netanyahu declared that Israel’s retaliation would be “far from over.”

“We’ve acted in the past, and we’ll act again. This is not a one-and-done,” he said, adding that the United States is also coordinating actions against the Houthis.

Israel’s Defence Minister Israel Katz echoed a hardline stance, promising, “Whoever harms us, we’ll harm them sevenfold.”

The missile struck just 75 meters from Terminal 3 of Ben Gurion Airport, leaving a 25-meter-deep crater after breaching four layers of air defence, including the US-made THAAD and Israel’s Arrow system. Despite multiple attempts, the missile was not intercepted, raising concerns about Israel’s missile defense readiness.

A full-scale investigation has been launched into the failure of the interception systems.

Houthi spokesperson Yahya Saree warned that Israel’s airport is “no longer safe for air travel,” reinforcing the group’s continued threat to Israeli and Red Sea interests.

The missile strike follows growing Israeli military action in Gaza and failed efforts to renew the ceasefire. The Houthis have intensified attacks since late 2023, in alignment with the escalating Israel-Hamas conflict.

Earlier this year, U.S. President Donald Trump authorized major airstrikes against Houthi bases in Yemen, in response to their threats against commercial shipping and Israeli targets.
