Jalandhar, Punjab: A heart-wrenching incident unfolded near Kishanpura Chowk in Jalandhar on Monday, where a three-year-old boy named Tripur was fatally run over by a speeding Mahindra XUV. The tragic accident occurred while the child was playing outside his home.
The accused, identified as 25-year-old Himanshu, initially fled the scene. However, Rama Mandi Police have now confirmed his arrest. SHO Manjinder Singh of Rama Mandi Police Station stated, “We have arrested the accused and confiscated the SUV, which is registered in his mother’s name.”
According to the FIR, the driver first hit a stray dog and moments later crushed the young child under the same vehicle. Locals attempted to chase the SUV, but the driver escaped before they could intercept him.
The victim’s uncle, Harish, shared that the family was preparing to take Tripur to a temple for his ‘mundan’ (tonsure ceremony) when the accident occurred. Tripur was the only son of Barinder Lucky, who runs a small dhaba in Jalandhar.
The child’s body has been sent to the local civil hospital for a post-mortem examination. The incident, caught on CCTV, has since gone viral on social media, further sparking public outrage.
The police have filed a case under Sections 106 (causing death by negligence), 281 (rash driving), and 125-A (endangering life or personal safety of others) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
