Awantipora, J&K – In a high-intensity gunbattle early Thursday morning, three terrorists were neutralized in a joint operation by the Indian Army and Jammu and Kashmir Police in Awantipora’s Tral region, part of south Kashmir’s Pulwama district.
Dramatic visuals from the encounter site show one militant armed with an assault rifle crouching behind a concrete pillar, while another clip shows the group hiding inside a broken-down shed. The militants had initially taken shelter inside a residential house before being cornered and eliminated.
This marks the second anti-terror operation in 48 hours in the Kashmir Valley. On May 13, three more terrorists were gunned down in Shopian after an encounter that began in Kulgam and spilled over into nearby forested areas.
💣 Weapons Recovered
According to the Indian Army’s Chinar Corps, the slain terrorists have been identified as:
- Asif Ahmed Sheikh
- Amir Nazir Wani
- Yawar Ahmed Bhat
Security forces recovered:
- 3 AK-series rifles
- 12 magazines
- 3 grenades
- Other war-like equipment
These encounters come amid heightened counter-terror operations in response to the Pahalgam terror attack in April, which left 26 civilians dead. That attack was claimed by The Resistance Front (TRF), a Lashkar-e-Taiba proxy.

🛡️ Operation Sindoor: India’s Forceful Response
In retaliation, India launched Operation Sindoor—a series of precision airstrikes on May 7, targeting nine terrorist camps, including four located in Pakistan, one of which was believed to be the Lashkar-e-Taiba HQ and training base.
Following these strikes, Pakistan responded with a wave of drone and missile attacks, all of which were intercepted by India’s advanced air defense systems. The escalating conflict resulted in four consecutive nights of cross-border strikes, before the United States brokered a ceasefire.
🇮🇳 PM Modi’s Statement
In a national address, Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed Operation Sindoor as a “new benchmark in India’s war on terror” and signaled a ‘new normal’ in India’s security doctrine.
