India Suspends Indus Waters Treaty, Vows Not to Let a Drop Flow to Pakistan

New Delhi:
In a decisive move following the recent terror attack in Jammu & Kashmir’s Pahalgam that left 26 people dead, Union Jal Shakti Minister CR Patil announced that India will stop the flow of Indus River water to Pakistan, declaring:

“We will ensure not even a drop of Indus water reaches Pakistan.”

The statement came after a high-level meeting at Home Minister Amit Shah’s residence, which included External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and top officials. Patil called the decision historic and justified, emphasizing national interest and India’s right to respond to sustained cross-border terrorism.

The suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty (1960) was formally notified by the Jal Shakti Ministry to Pakistan’s Ministry of Water Resources. The ministry stated:

“Honouring a treaty requires good faith. What we have seen is continued terrorism targeting Indian citizens.”

Next Steps & Immediate Priorities

Officials said the treaty’s suspension will be implemented immediately. Among the short-term priorities are:

  • De-silting dams on the Indus, Jhelum, and Chenab.
  • Increasing reservoir capacity to restrict outflow to Pakistan.
  • Bypassing Pakistan’s objections to Kishenganga and Ratle hydro projects.

In the longer term, India plans to construct new infrastructure and dams to maximize control over river resources.

Legal & Diplomatic Strategy

Anticipating international scrutiny, a legal response is being prepared in case of pressure from the World Bank or other global institutions. Diplomatically, India will explain the rationale to the world community to garner support and avoid backlash.

The government also reassured Indian citizens that domestic water supply will remain unaffected, with all decisions coordinated by the Jal Shakti, Home, and External Affairs ministries.

Pakistan’s Reaction

In a strongly worded statement, Pakistan termed India’s move an “act of war”, warning of a full-spectrum response:

“Any attempt to stop or divert water will be met with force across all dimensions of national power,” Pakistan’s government said.

As tensions intensify, India’s bold move signals a turning point in Indo-Pak relations, especially in how water is wielded as a geopolitical tool.
