New Delhi | May 9, 2025 Tensions escalated dramatically late Thursday night as Pakistan launched a series of missile and drone attacks on military targets across Jaisalmer (Rajasthan), Punjab, and Jammu & Kashmir, prompting blackouts and air raid alerts in multiple Indian cities.
Eyewitnesses reported loud explosions in Jaisalmer, followed by an eerie silence and then an hour-long wave of detonations. Authorities ordered complete blackouts in cities near the border, including Pathankot, Chandigarh, and other border districts, to shield critical infrastructure from aerial detection.
According to PTI, eight Pakistani missiles were aimed at targets in Jammu & Kashmir alone, all of which were successfully intercepted by India’s air defence systems.
Visuals from local residents captured dramatic moments of Pakistani missiles streaking across the night sky, only to be obliterated by Indian interceptors in real time.
Sources confirmed that one Pakistani F-16 fighter jet was shot down during the attack. The offensive came just hours after Operation Sindoor, India’s retaliatory strike on nine terrorist camps located in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK), which killed over 100 terrorists.
The attacks are seen as Pakistan’s response to India’s precision strikes, which utilized HAMMER smart bombs and SCALP missiles in a 25-minute window starting at 1:05 AM on Wednesday. India’s Israeli HARPY drones had also taken out several Pakistani air defence systems, paving the way for future counter-operations.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh confirmed the destruction of major terrorist hubs and training camps as part of Operation Sindoor, a direct response to the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, where 26 civilians were killed by terrorists from The Resistance Front, a known Lashkar-e-Taiba proxy.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi had earlier vowed that India would not remain silent, promising justice for the lives lost in Baisaran Valley. The recent Pakistani aggression now signals a volatile turn in regional military dynamics.
