Centre Approves HCL-Foxconn ₹3,706 Cr Semiconductor Plant in Jewar, UP; 2,000 Jobs Expected
In a major boost to India’s semiconductor ambitions, the Union Cabinet has approved a ₹3,706 crore joint venture between HCL and Foxconn to establish a semiconductor manufacturing facility in Jewar, Uttar Pradesh. The announcement was made by Information & Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, who highlighted the project’s strategic importance in strengthening India’s chip-making capabilities.
The upcoming plant, located in the Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority (YEIDA) region, will manufacture display driver chips used in smartphones, laptops, automobiles, and other electronic devices. Production is slated to begin in 2027.
The facility is expected to generate 2,000 direct jobs and will have the capacity to produce 20,000 semiconductor wafers per month. It will be one of six semiconductor units approved for India, with work already underway on the remaining five. One of these units is expected to be inaugurated by the end of this year.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath praised the Cabinet’s decision, calling it a “historic step” toward Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of an Atmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India).
“With this ₹3,700 crore investment, UP is set to emerge as a hub for high-end electronics and semiconductor manufacturing,” Yogi wrote on X, expressing gratitude to the Prime Minister.
The plant marks a significant milestone in India’s efforts to reduce its dependency on imported chips and become a global player in the semiconductor sector.
