New Delhi: In a stern message to his party leaders, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has issued a strong warning regarding recent controversial remarks made about Operation Sindoor and the tragic terrorist attack in Pahalgam. The Prime Minister reportedly expressed displeasure during a high-level meeting with Chief Ministers and Deputy Chief Ministers of NDA-ruled states held in Delhi, sources close to the matter said.
Modi’s advice was clear and direct—party leaders must refrain from making statements on every issue, especially those involving sensitive national security operations or tragic incidents. His warning comes in light of public outrage and legal scrutiny following irresponsible comments by some Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders.
BJP Leaders Under Fire for Controversial Statements
One of the most shocking incidents was the sexist and inflammatory comment made by Madhya Pradesh Minister Vijay Shah. During a public gathering, Shah made a derogatory reference to Colonel Sofiya Qureshi, who became the public face of the Indian Army during media briefings on Operation Sindoor, a precision strike operation targeting terror bases in Pakistan and Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir (PoK).
Shah outrageously referred to Colonel Qureshi as a “sister of terrorists” and used communal and sexist language to discredit her role. He said, “You widowed sisters of our community, so a sister of your community will strip you naked. Modi ji proved that the daughters of your community can be sent to Pakistan to take revenge.” His comments not only sparked widespread public outrage but also reached the Supreme Court, where judges expressed strong disapproval.
Adding to the controversy, BJP Rajya Sabha MP Ram Chander Jangra made a highly insensitive remark about the women who lost their husbands in the Pahalgam terrorist attack on April 22. Speaking at an event in Bhiwani, Haryana, to commemorate the birth anniversary of Maratha queen Ahilyabai Holkar, Jangra implied that the victims lacked courage and strength.
“The women who lost their husbands lacked the warrior spirit, enthusiasm and zeal… Terrorists do not spare anyone just because they fold their hands,” Jangra said. Referring to the deadly attack in which 26 people were killed, he further added, “Had the tourists been trained like Agniveers, they might have survived.”
When asked how ordinary civilians were expected to confront armed terrorists, Jangra compared them to historical warrior queens. “Ahilyabai Holkar was a woman, so was Rani Lakshmibai—did they not fight? We want our sisters to be brave and live courageously,” he added, doubling down on his comments rather than retracting them.
PM Modi Steps In to Contain Fallout
Faced with increasing criticism from the public and opposition parties, Prime Minister Modi’s intervention is seen as an attempt to contain the damage and reassert the party’s image ahead of critical political developments, including upcoming state elections.
Sources from within the NDA confirmed that Modi emphasized restraint, responsibility, and discipline while addressing issues of national interest. “Avoid speaking on every matter. Not everything requires a comment,” he told senior party leaders, underlining the need for media maturity and strategic silence in sensitive times.
Political analysts believe that Modi’s remarks indicate the growing concern within the BJP leadership over the unfiltered, controversial statements made by lower and mid-level leaders, which often distract from core policy issues and tarnish the party’s image.
Upholding Institutional Integrity
The remarks against Colonel Qureshi, a decorated officer representing India’s military response to cross-border terrorism, have particularly angered citizens across communities. The Indian Armed Forces, widely respected for their discipline and secular values, were indirectly demeaned by the comments, leading to calls for strict disciplinary action against Minister Vijay Shah.
Opposition leaders, including from the Congress and Aam Aadmi Party, have demanded Shah’s resignation and an apology from the BJP. Women’s rights groups and ex-servicemen associations have also condemned both Shah and Jangra’s remarks, urging the Prime Minister to take stricter action beyond verbal warnings.
As the party navigates these turbulent waters, PM Modi’s message is clear: there is no room for irresponsible rhetoric, especially when it undermines national unity, disrespects the armed forces, and exploits communal sentiments. The BJP now faces the challenge of realigning internal discipline with the public accountability expected from a ruling party in the world’s largest democracy.
