New Delhi: Before Chinese brands like Xiaomi and Vivo dominated India’s smartphone landscape, brands like LG, Sony, HTC, and Blackberry held a strong presence. Over time, however, they fell behind due to poor brand positioning, ineffective marketing, delayed innovation, and the aggressive rise of Chinese competitors.
Now, LG—which exited the smartphone business back in 2021—has officially announced it will shut down all smartphone update servers by June 30, 2025.
What’s Shutting Down?
According to a public notice on LG’s official website, the following services will stop working after midnight KST on June 30:
- FOTA (Firmware Over The Air) update system
- LG Update Center
- LG Bridge (used for PC-based updates)
This means:
- No further Android OS upgrades will be available.
- Pre-installed apps deleted during reset won’t be re-downloadable.
- Even LG Service Centres will stop providing software-related support.
What Should LG Smartphone Users Do?
If you’re still using an LG phone, here’s what you need to do before June 30:
- Download any pending updates immediately.
- Reinstall any deleted apps you may need in the future.
- Back up your device to avoid potential app or data loss.
Users should also consider that LG devices are now three Android generations behind, with no access to Android 15, and the absence of security patches increases vulnerability to malware or cyber threats.
Final Thoughts
The shutdown marks the end of LG’s mobile legacy. If you’re still on an LG device, now is the time to transition to a new smartphone. Continued use without updates may compromise security and performance.
